No offense, but are you perhaps getting cunfused with another species, Taxodium distichum for example, which can have pneumatophores around it's base? If so, I'd love to see a pic under the bark/one cut open please - I've never had the opportunity. And they may well be of use for turning...

no its a wellingtonia 100%. never seen anything like it before,there is a defect at the base and its trying to protect itself by growing around the bottom,ive checked several of them near by but none have anything remotely similar,although all the ones ive checked have been very mature/veteran trees while this one is only semi mature will try and upload a pic later of one of the stripped bits,definately a very rare find
