I have been asked to supply 2 large oak trunks (2.5ft x 5ft) for a chap I do some work for who owns and runs a business park local to me. He wants them for a ww1 memorial I think, as the business park was hospital for soldiers during and after the war. Now should I charge them for them if so how much and/or donate the money to the RBL or keep it. I was going to either plank them and sell the wood or make some more benches when I get time but still have a couple of trunks left.

If you were going to utilise the timber, then you need to weigh up the profit you would make after you had utilised it. Analyse this against the time and effort in utilising the timber, and just delivering the timber to the chap. The ease of one job, but lesser potential for income, against the complexities and effort in the utilisation of it. Have you got much time in your diary to utilise the timber, is it unlikely you will use it in next 6-8 months?

Once you have decided if your going to depart with the timber in this way, you may have some value for it sale.

Once you have a value for the sale of it, and wish to sell it, charge the chap accordingly, calculate your costs for transporting it etc, deduct this from the cost of the sale, and give the rest to charity. That way you know for sure that your good nature had gone to right cause. And not his rear pocket!!!
