Prefer the 180 as it is slightly more powerfull, the same weight as the 170 and almost the same price second hand! Only con, if something goes wrong, there a pig to work on!

Re: Stihl MS 170 as a good topper?

got one three years ago to bring a dirty(full of old wire etc) overgrown hedge back down to 4 feet, hawthorn holly dead/live elm,oak ,et all. left some of the nicer specimens with just a crown lift, all on a steep bank into a deep ditch(running). thought it might kill the saw ,but hey no great loss. it got dropped, dunked, hit untold metal and now is comissioned for roots and anything you are shy of with pro saw. apart from that thin guage chain (cutters prone to deforming under duress) , it deffies all concerted attempts to do it in, deffo get another!
