Background

 

Ground Control is an award-winning commercial landscaping company (14 BALI awards). The company has grown by over 20% every year for nine years running with turnover now exceeding £42 million annually. Ground Control focuses on large regional and national contracts with multi-site operators. We currently maintain over 20,000 sites for some of the country's largest retailers, utility companies and local authorities (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, B&Q, Waitrose, Travel Lodge, The Co-op, Anglian Water, Thames Water; public sector customers including Enfield Council, Rutland Council and Anglesey Council and social housing customers include Festival Housing, ISOS Housing Group and North Wales Housing etc.) The business has three major components: Grounds Maintenance, Winter Maintenance and Landscape Construction.

‘We have an excellent opportunity for dynamic individuals to join our rapidly expanding national arboricultural and vegetation management team provider based in the Midlands.

 

Role and Responsibilities

 

To work in liaison with the Operations Manager to ensure overhead power line arboricultural work is completed within a geographical area utilising a team of operational staff. To ensure work is completed to the highest possible standards in terms of safety, environment, quality, customer service and profitability.

 

 

• To exercise authority only in accordance with the company authority Schedule.

 

• Achieve a high level of safety awareness and employee / contractor safety accountability throughout the Contract to achieve zero lost time accidents per year and TRIR of 0. This is to be achieved by ensuring that the job holder and team both work to and keep up to date with current statutory legislation and the Company’s health and safety requirements including Client Safety authorisation process. (Management of Client authorisation processes are separately defined).

 

• Management of daily operations of Arboriculture / Utility interface including ownership for team safety, quality, process control, surveying, procedures, costs, problem solving, housekeeping, planning, preparations, co-ordination and continuous improvement.

• To achieve spend of approximately £500k at or below macro value. To reduce macro, management and overhead costs through increased production, reduced downtime, reduced waste, effective use of resources (labour, fuels, equipment, and contractors) and effective forward planning for shutdown days, projects, etc.

• To focus on delivering a high level of customer service to both our Client and their customers in order to minimize complaints. Resolving complaints when necessary in a timely and satisfactory manner for both the Customer and Ground Control

• To reduce CML’s to the lowest acceptable level without compromising Safety.

• Develop team to complete all process or equipment audits accurately and in sufficient detail.

• To contribute as necessary to internal and external reporting requirements

• Continually identify and implement procedures and systems to involve employees in meeting the business objectives.

 

 

Principal Accountabilities

• To comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Company’s Health and Safety Policy, TUSH and other legislation.

• To be aware of and implement Ground Control’s Assurance Management System (ISO 9001:2000); ISO 14001: OHSAS 18001.

• To complete Safety, Quality and Environmental Inspections as delegated by the Operations Manager.

• To set a professional, positive mature attitude to key company values.

• To plan and arrange work to the highest industry standards and client specifications and to implement established Ground Control best practice whenever possible with safety considerations at the forefront.

• To delegate onsite responsibilities to suitable Responsible Person's as necessary in order to satisfactorily complete work and to provide assistance in implementing corrective and preventative measures to problems and issues as they arise.

• To report job progress on a weekly basis and maintain revisit and clearance data of sites.

• To help achieve monthly KPI' targets.

• To accompany client and other stakeholders as necessary.

• To help plan and maintain an effective and efficient, cost effective 6 week work program.

• To deputize for the Operations Manager in his absence for area responsibilities and tasks.

 

 

Key Competencies

The candidate will ideally have had some, but not necessarily all, of the following experiences before joining:

 

• NPTC Utility Arboriculture Units 1, 2.1, 5.1 and 5.2

• LANTRA Basic or Professional Tree Inspectors Qualification

• Degree in Arboriculture preferred

• Well-developed people management skills and the ability to work well within a

Team environment.

• Well-developed organisational, communication and planning skills.

• Competent user of IT.

• Negotiation and influencing skills

• NRSWA Chapter 8

• Holds a valid driving licence

• Ability to plan and allocate vehicles, plant and equipment to teams

• Knowledge of plant and equipment and ability to diagnose problems

• Resource materials and suppliers cost effectively to meet customer specifications

• Financial skills to enable cost centre budgets - income and expenditure to be prepared

• Management of sub-ordinate staff such as Contract Supervisor and Team Leaders

• Builds relationships: identifies all concerned parties from within the client / customer group, involving and engaging them

• Establishes competence: demonstrates the ability to see works from an operator’s point of view

• Recovers quickly when sites below standard or after complaints

• Responds quickly to client requests (“next day when possible, never longer than a week”)

Horticultural Knowledge

• Knows Latin plant names and their growth rates. Able to visualise the necessary sequence of tasks in order to accurately estimate the optimum time and identify equipment required to complete a job.
