we had a similar problem with out 288xp , it turned out that one of the spade conectors on a wire going to the coil had broken - roughly 16 pence and 20 mins in out workshop and it was fixed !

the wire from the coil to the starter switch is ok,ive taken out the coil and the wires and had a look,the other day the plug was sparking[i know the plug is ok] i would say the coil has broken down

seen one on e-bay £20
