Check that there is a letter (A or B) stamped on the flat part of the cylinder by the plug hole. It there isn't then it is a Chinese top end. The cylinder will bear the Mahle name near the transfer casting on, I believe, the flywheel side.

Make sure the saw has a priming bulb and the newer double legged muffler support located on the upper dog mount and the front oil tank mount! If it doesn't have these, it is the older 45cc machine.

Compression should be circa 160-170psi on a decent engine. The carb manifold should have a metal clamp. Make sure the saw starts 3-5 pulls, make sure it idles and revs out OK, expect a little bogging when cold, make sure the revs drop to a steady idle when the throttle is snapped shut.

The 346 clutches can get a bit rattly but isn't terminal, make sure the overall condition is OK.

Going to view the above at the weekend, aside general condition, compression and running it, are there any major things i should be looking for?

Further to the advise on looking over a 346 xp NE 50cc....the NE should have grey top case clips if right. The cylinder should have a decomp where the OE 45cc did not. This is the main thing that you HAVE to be clued up about as there are nasty low grade top ends with a decomp fitted that give the impression all COULD be well. As Spud points out there is more to it than that so look for the Mahle detail but also be advised there is a good after market replacement top end made by Meteor. Although not OEM it is a good alternative but should have a downward haggling opportunity for you. In my opinion as the NE was introduced 2007 onwards it should have its OEM top end on it really or its done a LOT of work ,not been well kept , had a top end fail ..etc . It is not easy to find cheep ( North of £300 is very common) good domestic user saws that will mostly be a good bet regards to life left in the saw. Hope that adds to the pot of info for you.

Just a little edit: I missed out the word ..Early ..before OE 45cc. That should have gone......"decomp where the early OE 45cc did not."

My error.

The "silver" clutch cover isn't a sure way to determine if it is a NE/50cc one or not, as they often are swapped out/around. The presence of a purge bulb is a safer sign, but even that one isn't really safe - you have to look at the cylinder, and make sure it isn't an aftermarket one, or a lesser OEM Husky one.

A serial number above 07 19XXXXX assures it left the factory as a NE one - but not what a used one is today. There even were 45cc NE ones, but as far as I know those only were sold in Japan.
