254 cutting out

will work away fine then the nest time it just cuts out from full revs will be cutting away fine then just dies was useing it to day to block logs and it just cut out then will not start for ages

dirt in the carb?
blocked air filter?

to add another thing to check, the fuel tank breather, mine had similar probs, would it restart if you open the fuel filler cap?

If its cutting out like you are switching it off ie very rapidly then check the wiring isnt fouling and earthing out somewhere.

I've got an MS260 a bit like that..it idles ok, you get full revs for a few seconds then dies. I think it might be the diaphragm.

Might not be this but some had a problem with the on/off wire shorting against the av housing. IIRC if you remove the airfilter cover you should be able to see it on the left hand side. Our ms260 used to cut out randomly and this was the prob.

I'll check that out, thanks..although this is a slow death rather than sudden..and if you let go quick enough, it will drop to idle without cutting out.
