Problem starting 372xp

Hello Chaps,

I am new to this forum so hope I have posted in the right forum and also that this isn't too stupid a question....

I was using my saw the other day and the chain and bar got very hot (i had already checked the oiling so didn't think there would be a problem) so I removed the bar and chain and the oiling section was clear and moist with oil, I cooled everything off then put the chain and bar back on, when I went to start the saw again it wouldn't start and just coughed and a little bit of smoke came out of I thought the decompression button. Anyway I left the saw for the rest of the day and tried to start it again in the evening, I applied the choke and it did the customary cough so I pushed the choke in and then it just did the same as before, one pop/cough then nothing.

Two questions, firstly, I am running a recently purchasedd 15" bar on my saw, is this too smal and could account for the overheating/insufficient oiling of the chain?

Secondly, I removed the spark plug and checked for a spark I can't see one but that doesn't neccesarily mean there sin't one?

Do you chaps have any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance,

Jack.

I'd be surprised if the size of the bar was the problem as my 372's spent pretty much it's whole life running 15" and 8 tooth rim (so the chain was running even faster) and it's not caused any problems.

Can't really help on the other bits though sorry.

I'd check the clutch first with those symptoms. It has an inboard clutch(?). See if it'll start without bar and chain as a quick check. If it does, check the clutch.

Hi Rover,

I have removed the bar and it still doesn't want to start, I am confused because it was running perfectly before the chain overheated.

Thanks for your reply though.

Hi Chris,

Ok, thanks for that, I was just mulling possible causes over in my head, maybe it was just a particulalry unpleasant piece of timber!

Thanks,

Jack.

How does the compression feel now ? When you said smoke from around the decomp I just wondered if it had nipped up . Have a look down the exhaust see if there is any scoring , a ring stuck maybe ? Is your fuel old/mixed right ? Jumping the gun a bit but have a look .

Thanks guys for all of your suggestions, I honestly think this one is beyond my abilities, the compression seems ok, I can't see any scoring down the exhaust, the fuel was mixed only last week and is 50:1 stihl hp ultra, the only thing that slightly worries me is on pulling it over and it coughing after a few goes I notice a little wetting around the spark plug.

I'll take it to my machine bloke for him to have a look.
