Just being looking into this myself. I spoke to someone from the national insurance contributions office earlier today. You just have to give them a ring when you start working and declare self employed/employed. Obviously you're already paying NI through your employment so, your national insurance contributions don't start until you earn over 5725 I believe and then it worked out at something like 2.40 a week on the basic band. don't take all of this as gospel.

Yes you can. The only thing is you pay NI contribution and also NI with the PAYE but then you have security of the employed job so its all swings and round abouts.

 

Plus I usually like it as your usually paying too much tax on the employed job therefore when Self assessment time comes you don't have to find lots of money unless you have earned lots self employed that is.
