The importance of research and asking for help when needed

I thought I'd post this as it may help other carvers if they find themselves in a similar predicament.

I don't normally do bears but took this one on with a very short lead time.

it was a good size log but had quite a taper and had initially thought that there wasn't enough wood to get the head in without tucking its nose down into its chest.

This threw me a little and I ended up with a head out of proportion with very little neck.

Now I could have let it go out as it was as I'd used all the jobs hrs but I just wasn't happy with it.

So after seeking advice from seasoned bear carvers and finding more relevant ref. images I reworked the head, neck and shoulders.

So, my profit margins took a hit but I fixed a problem on the cusp of a deadline and delivered a bear I was much happier with.

Sometimes you get wrapped up in the details and need to step back to see obvious mistakes.

We are always learning, don't be afraid to ask for help:)

I am amazed at your skill and sense of proportion. The head is much better now you have reworked it. Do you think the claws on its front paws are a little on the long side (a bit kruegeresque!)? Perhaps not.

Anyway far superior to anything I could do and many others I have seen at shows.

I would struggle with a toadstool!

What species was the log?

Thanks mate, yes front claws are probably too long but from each piece we learn more haha.

It was carved from oak and final height was around 6.5 ft. Think it was 7ft before it got reworked.
