Choker ropes

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in trying out some choker ropes as an alternative to chains for skidding with the 6T double drum winch on my Unimog. The light weight appeals compared to steel. Does anyone have experience of these and know who stocks them please? Teufelberger make Stratos choker ropes but I've only seen these on their website: ::Teufelberger:Choker Ropes

Cheers,

Tom.

I don't know if Herr Grube has started shipping this way. They usually have about 50 pages of chokers in the catalogue so I'm sure they'd do dyneema chokers for you?

EDIT: Found them, hope you didn't spend too much at Christmas!

Are you using steel or dyneema rope on the winch?

I read a very interesting research on the economics between the 2 and even though it's significantly more expensive they found dyneema to be more economical over time. I just can't bring myself to pay extra to convert over from steel though.

Something I was looking at closely too in finding something better than chains for my applications, and found these that have a few links of chain to attach straight to grab hook or slider, and a needle fitted.

Coming up with Treadlight Forestry as a Dealer, who I'm certain are on here?

Is there a way to link them into the Thread?

Hi Eddie,

Yes - We are a Portable Winch dealer and can supply all Portable Winch accessories.

I have not tried the rope choker but have just order one to use with my PCW5000 winch so I can report back.

They retail at £55 + VAT so more expensive than a chain choker but they are a fraction of the weight.

The other consideration is the minimum breaking strength is 7100 kg so OK for smaller winches but not really suitable for anything too powerful.

I know the EA use rope in all their winches and rope choakers too.

Could you splice some lowering line with a stiff eye at one end and a few chain links and needle at the other. Would work out cheaper. If you did say 19mm line you could use it on big winches too.

Hi TREE MUCH easier on the body as they're lighter to move around how about strops and just pass them back through the loop thanks John

I think that's quite an exceptable strength for winching work if all your pulling is poles from thinning as it's not realy the power of the winch but what it's pulling and over/through what.

Would have been so much nicer carrying 6 of those up the hill's we used to winch off rather than the chains we had.

Easy enough to splice some up from some tennex from most of the gear company's on here to give it a go.
