flip line and lanyard

hi this might be a totally stupid question so apologies in advance but do a flip line and a lanyard do the same thing

im new to climbing and starting to buy my gear bit by bit i just need to know if the essentially do the same thing or a*re totally different cheers phil :thumbup:

i know they are both secondary support from your main climb line any advice is welcome

a lanyard is a short length of rope, sour side strops are lanyards a flip-line is a steel core lanyard and should be used when chainsawing on an upright step stem see afag 401

 

both are typically used as a primary attachment point as well as secondary
