Advertising/promotion

Hi guys, what have you all found to be the best methods of promoting your business? I'm trying to find the most cost effective way of reaching the most potential customers. Seems it's easy to get duped into signing up for things that promise the earth only to find they take your money but don't deliver!

Thanks,

Thea.

A bit of everything, no magic bullet or everyone would do the same. I'm in 3 local mags, website, sign writing on transit, Adwords when quiet and have a company deliver leaflets when needs be and all of that is required to keep us working. Hopefully a few more years will mean I can drop back a bit on all that as get more regular/ repeat customers. Just starting to feel these jobs make a bit of a difference after around 2 years of going on my own

Depends on budget. A well position bill board ad can grab huge amounts of attention. Can run to several hundred pounds a week plus the sign cost.

I don't mind leaflets but blanket leafletting doesn't seem very effective. I would leaflet ten houses either side of the house you are working on in the morning.

Commercial or domestic work?

Would be interested to hear your opinions on procuring commercial work Bob. Generally for domestic I think you just need to wisely trial things and see what works, preferably use recommended means of advertising by asking other business owners you know and go from there. A good well ranked website is always good and adwords.

Thanks for the suggestions, a few ideas I'd not thought of there. How well do adwords work? I was looking at that the other day but wondered if it was possible for an idiot to keep clicking on it and rack you up a massive bill?! Or does it register repeat clicks from the same ip address as one click?

Bob - both! Though I've found with commercial it tends to be who you know more than anything but if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

I'd like to put together a promotional pack or prospectus for commercial clients, can anyone recommend someone or a company or a printers that does such things?

At the minute I'm applying the KISS principle to my advertising, wheel cover on the discovery, Facebook business page and leave a card with anyone I do a job for or any new log customers so they know what else I do, low cost and so far so good.

Have you tried a bit of networking, we've a few guys that attend BNI breakfast events each week. They've a broad spectrum of trades in each chapter and refer work around each other every week.

God no, tried that for a year, massive waste of time. It's all about getting new members to join and very little work from it
