I would like to start climbing, recreational to start with but with the hope to expand and get my tickets later but i was wondering how much i'd need for a starter set up? and whether its better to pay more now as i expect things like a cheap harness will need replacing sooner than a good one?

First of all welcome! :thumbup1:

Don't worry too much about the chainsaw PPE side of it now, if you're just starting out save up for that for when you have your tickets.

If you're after a harness try the Petzl Navaho / sequoia range, can get them pretty cheap these days, it has everything you need on it and last for years :)

Side strop/Split tail can cost around £30 for 5M x 13mm (thats as long as youll ever need) and £20 for 2 prusik loops

Then you're gonna need a rope, most common is 13mm x 35-45m length, try New England/Yale/Marlow, there are more but just have a look round.

You will also need 1 or 2 micro pulleys (you can add one to your side strop & prusik to make it easier to tend, see Blakes/Distel hitch's) about £10 each for the ISC 28Kn ones.

Also, you may want to get a throwline and throw bag along with a cambium/friction saver to reduce wear on the rope and protect the tree.

Once you get used to everything then you can start to progress through better knots, mechanical devices and eventually once the tickets are done you are on the road to becoming a tree surgeon.

There are more things like rigging kits/lowering gear but wait till you have all your climbing tickets first, as that is another course :thumbup1:
