Beech Hedge problems - ?disease

Two 'trees' within my beech hedge have bright orange spots (?fungus) on the bark and branches where they emerge from the small trunks. The leaves have looked dead all through late Spring summer. There now seem to be new leaf buds at the top of the twigs however. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be, and whether I should be worried/doing anything.

I have seen that on beech I thought it might be serious but hedge hasn't died back of any more that when I first noticed it yrs ago.

 

Its only on the section of the hedge that is too heavily shaded by other trees nearby to be to be very healthy.
