Yes, that is a lot of bracket. Maybe more important than the shear mass or volume of fruiting body is the degree of arc or circumferential extent around the base of the tree. I accept the original description that the crown looks OK, but the sapwood is dead and decaying inward from the points of attachment of the brackets. Or that's my bet!
