If there is a terciery air baffle in the back of the firebox these are fully open all the while. This will be a row of holes across the rear firebrick.

If there is a terciery system in place you wont be able to close it down as they are not adjustable. Look at it as a safety device to prevent you polluting the atmosphere and tarring up your flue.

If there is no terciery system air is getting in somewhere it should not, a lighted candle held near the stove is a good indicator when the flame gets pulled toward the stove.

Hi I have a Hunter Herald 14 and when we got it we had a thermostat fitted to it and as it turns out it was fitted back to front so if I tried to shut down the fire the thermostatically controlled flap at the back of the fire would open and the hotter the water in the wrap boiler got the further the fire would open up. We had loads of hot water for baths but could not sit in the living room. The thermostatically controlled flap is at the rear of the stove L/H side if looking from the front. and if you don't have one fitted check the blank plate as it was held on with one bolt.

Thanks alycidon , the terciery air is adjustable , so I have closed that! I will have a go with a candle.

Terciery air should not normally be adjustable, are you sure its not the primary air supply under the grate you are confusing it with, easy thing to do. done it myself on a stove I was not familier with.

Pleased you got it sorted ok,

The terciery air on this stove is a slot on the back with a triangled piece on metal that rotates on a nut so you can set it yourself. I have chosen fully closed. It puts a constant supply if air to the back of the fire via a strip of metal with holes in. But made the burn too fast and uncontrollable. Thanks for your concern.
