White birch bark

Hi,

I'm a tree surgeon in the south of England. I would like to try and construct a birch bark canoe. However White birch bark is a little hard to find in the UK. If not impossible.

If anyone knows different, please let me know. If not does anyone know suppliers that may be able to source it for the UK.

Thanks in advance arbtalkers.

I think you will find it really difficult to source decent quality birch bark. I remember watching a ray mears program on it once and even himself in the area with supposedly the best bark was struggling. Would be great to see it if you manage it though, some pics would be great.

hi,

in answer to your question, canoe birch (which in english is known as paperbark birch, betula papyrieira) is one of several white birches, but the only one suitable for canoe construction. it isn't native to the u.k. but is in many other parts of the northern hemisphere. the anishinabe (the first nations of canada) call it wikwas, and they would say it only grows in canada and the most northern u.s. states. you can buy it online and if you are interested i can find you the link. but its not cheap. (my avatar is the canoe i built in the woods in way northern ontario where i lived for awhile). it was one of the best things i ever got to do. if you want any advice, please ask. i'd be more than happy to help.

Thanks for the info guys. Seen the ray meats show and a few other good you tube videos. It is indeed the betula ( however you spell it) species that is needed. Wish it was silver birch? Then it would be easy. Loads of them. I'm pretty sure all the other supplies can be sourced locally but any links or suggestions anyone has will be much appreciated. Great job on the canoe Canoehead. Must be really satisfying.
