Perfect Age Structure Of A Woodland?!?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am currently doing a small project at uni on management of a local woodland in Birmingham.

I have chosen to look at trees in particular, and more specifically the age/ size of trees.

Do you guys think that there is a 'Perfect age/size of trees in a small woodland'?

Thanks for any replies! :thumbup1:

for a SSSI the age structure would be dependent on tree species and what the SSSI designation is in regard to, is it for deadwood habitat and associated fauna or say wild flowers associated with an open canopy?

so the perfect age structure would be defined by the age of the species were it is at its optimum for habitat?

Hi All

My understanding is that if you are managing a woodland for sustainability and habitat you should be aiming to achieve a mixture of young understory trees, middle aged intermediate sized and mature overstory specimens (as well at good amounts of deadwood etc).

The species mix and management plan will depend on what's there at the moment, what's suited to the site etc.
