Diff lock working on iveco 180e23?

Had a closer look at this and found a square cover on the front side of the diff.

Took it off, undoing 4 x 10mm bolts.

Plunger under the cover was free, and air was coming from the hole in the cover, so not sure what's up.

Putting the cover back on, I couldn't get it to sit back on flat, something seemed to be stopping it, but couldn't see anything.

Any ideas?
