Depends on the boots; if they're 'breathable' you need to be very careful what you put on in order to maintain the breathabiity; there are specialised products. For plain leather... you're going to get a host of replies but when I get round to it I use neatsfoot oil.

I have neatsfoot oil amongst a host of other products . Did read somewhere that neatsfoot oil softens leather but will eventually make it fall apart . This was on one of those " Whats the best product for boots " that I googled ....Just lately I have been using Leder Gris mk 2 and Leder Griss Extreem with good results .

I "feed" the leather now and again with neatsfoot oil, otherwise I use Chelsea dubbin, have done for a long time. My current boots are about 3year old and holding up well. Dry feet too. :001_smile: personally, I think the secret in boot longevity is to dry them slowly, get mud and grit off them and treat them at least once a week. I usually wear out the soles before the uppers fall apart. I think the only exception years ago were the old Oregon green boots.

In my experience starting with the old DMS boots many years ago it is nigh on impossible to keep feet dry with leather boots. Eventually your favourites will give up on the stitching or crack despite treating with all sorts of waterproofing products.

I use seal skin socks as distributed to the poor bloody infantry.Warm inner layer and goretex type outer. I find they work brilliantly and havent let me down yet. Dont have to worry about boots giving up the ghost and they aint that expensive a pair.

Some people are soft{read: gentle} on their boots and some are really, really hard. I used to use dubbin, then I got a life.

Even the Meindl boots only last about 18 months. We get about a year on average out of these boots. a good pair of boots should start to fall apart at the seams just as they start to lose waterproofness.

Throw them away and start again. Life is too short.
