Herbicide around young trees

Recommended Posts

I planted a difficult site last year on an ash heap from a power station. There was a thread about it. Amazingly the wet summer last year was in our favour and the trees are doing OK. We basically heaped a load of soil ontop of the thin layer already over the ash and planted the trees into that.

There was a big issue with broadleaf weeds growing up between the trees. The client wants grass. We strimmed/mowed them down last autumn but want a selective contact herbicide that will knock out the broadleaf weeds but let the grasses survive.

Is there something that fits the bill or do we kill everything and reseed. Or just recommend regular mowing..

Hi there, I use Round Up ProBiactve 450 by Monsanto to control weeds on new plantings as it is ideal for this application. You will need to have your PA1 & PA6 to get hands on this chemaical. Hope this helps.

would you use this in an orchard to get trid of grass from around the tree, for less compatition

No, I'd use cardboard over the grass, then cover it in rotted wood chip (see thread to mulch or not to mulch)
